What are the pros and cons of the transverse and longitudinal arrangement of the engine?

Today, cars are produced with a longitudinal and transverse engine arrangement, while car owners often argue about which type of engine location is better, what are the advantages and disadvantages of such an arrangement. It should be borne in mind that the location of the motor will largely depend on the design of the car, the volume of the engine compartment, the size of the engine and the location of the gearbox. The longitudinal arrangement of the engine is considered a classic; this arrangement can simultaneously be used with rear and front-wheel drive vehicles. It is necessary to take into account the fact that such a longitudinal arrangement of the engine invariably leads to an increase in the engine compartment, respectively, the cars have large dimensions, and in the conditions of the crowded busy streets of large cities, it is always problematic to operate such cars. Not surprisingly, many automakers today are moving away from this classic longitudinal engine design by placing it laterally under the hood.

Transverse arrangement of the engine
With the transverse arrangement of the engine, the motor is perpendicular to the main axis of the car body. In recent years, such an arrangement of the engine compartment has become more widespread, and this is found not only in small cars, but even in business sedans and sports cars. This saves space under the hood, while at the same time engineers can reduce the size of the machines.

Due to the transverse arrangement of the engine, there is no need to use a cardan shaft, respectively, there is no cardan tunnel in the cabin, and the floor is flat, which makes it possible to somewhat increase the comfort in the cabin.

With the transverse arrangement of the engines, the thrust from the motor is transmitted to the wheels practically without losses, it is not required to use a differential, which somewhat simplifies the design of the car. The handling of the car is significantly improved, since the entire mass falls on the front axle, which excludes the car skidding on a slippery icy road. The weight of the car is slightly reduced, which improves the fuel efficiency of such cars.

At the same time, the transverse arrangement of the engine has certain disadvantages, first of all, it is a low engine power, since it is simply impossible to install a powerful six-eight-cylinder engine in such a case. Tuning enthusiasts will also be disappointed with such a transverse arrangement of the engine, since it is simply impossible to perform any modification and swap of the motor.
